Minutes of the Regional Board meeting of the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges Northeastern Region, April 25, 1998.
Attending: Michael Anderson, Matt Dickerson, Tim Huang, Laurie Smith King, Amruth Kumar, Ralph Morelli, Viera Proulx, Ingrid Russell (Chair), Ethel Schuster, Bill Taffe, Charles Welty.
Not Attending: Richard Close, Ralph Walde, Hoyt Warner.
Reports:
Ingrid Russell reports that the affiliation between CCSCNE and SIGCSE is almost final, but is not ready to be publicly announced.
Ingrid Russell has encouraged her students to submit possible logos to the CCSCNE logo contest. The prize is $50.
We agreed that the definition of a poster should be broadened. A table and an electric outlet should be provided for students who wish to display something using their own computer equipment. Internet access will not be provided.
We agreed to keep the local budget under local control.
Everyone agreed that the speakers were very good this year. We should all contribute to choosing next year's speakers.
We have done very well financially. We agreed to raising the speakers' honorarium to $300 in order to continue getting good speakers.
Meals: One contributing factor to our financial success has been the money we have saved on meals. The conferences have not ordered enough lunches and dinners for all registrants. (A brief mention was made of ordering enough for the preregistrants, but we may have ordered more than that number of meals.) It was suggested that if we continue having sit down dinners, having water, salad, bread, and butter on the table when we sit down could speed up the process. People generally agreed that the meal was slow in being served.
It was agreed that we will store conference details on the Web. These details would include such things as the way various situations with speakers, chairs, panels, publishers, meals, hotels, etc. were handled. This will allow successful and failed a ctions to be recorded in a more permanent way for reference by future conference committees.
This year we had about 240 registrants and 17 vendors. The numbers were not final at the time of this meeting.
CCSCNE 2000 will be at Ramapo College of New Jersey. It will be the 5th anniversary of the conference. It was suggested that a dinner cruise around Manhattan be held in celebration. The Web page is at http://orion.ramapo.edu/~csconf/ccscne. Since r eviewers will sign up through the Web page, papers submitted, and reviews done over the Web, it is strongly suggested that board members test out the page and let Amruth Kumar know how it works (good and bad).
CCSCNE 2001 could be at Middlebury, St. Michael's, UConn, or BU. There was some discussion of having Middlebury and St. Michael's sponsor the conference jointly. No decision was made.
Ralph Walde is very busy and wishes to leave the board. Walde's resignation was regretfully accepted.
(Dickerson/Proulx) By article 4 of the bylaws (replacing a member who leaves the board) Tim Huang (Middlebury) was nominated for the board. Unanimously approved.
Viera will send email to Richard Close about his interest in continuing on the board.
The next Regional Board meeting will be on Sept. 12, 1998 between 11:00 am
and 3:00 pm, at Providence College. All members of the board and the conference committee are expected to be there.
Viera Proulx has been nominated as chair of the regional board and representative to the national board. We will be voting this summer. (In the bylaws Article 6 specifies this year for this election, 1998 modulus 3 = 0)
The board showed its great appreciation for Ingrid Russell's founding of the board and her work in making the conferences successful.
With Viera Prouls being nominated for chair, the Editor office becomes vacant. Amruth Kumar has volunteered to be Editor, leaving the Membership office vacant. Ralph Morelli has volunteered to be Membership Chair. Ingrid Russell filled these vacanci es (according to bylaws Article 7, Section a, Paragraph iii) with the respective volunteers.
Adjourn by acclamation.
Respectfully submitted by Charles Welty (secretary)
